Signs of Shoulder Tendonitis

Do you have a limited range of motion and pain in your shoulder? If so it may be tendonitis, an inflammation of the connective tissue and muscles within this complex joint. At Illinois Orthopedic Institute in Joliet, Bolingbrook, and Channahon, IL, Drs. George, Kuo, and Pizinger offer patients relief and better functionality through careful treatment and therapies.

Your amazing shoulder

It's made up of the clavicle, or collarbone, the upper end of the humerus (arm), tendons, and the rotator cuff, a group of muscles that helps your shoulder accomplish its complicated range of motion.

Through repetitive motion, athletics, age, and sudden injury, such as a fall, you may develop a common shoulder problem called tendonitis. Stiffness, swelling, and pain are its most common symptoms, and they can progress, leading to disability in this ball and socket joint.

Diagnosing and treating shoulder tendonitis

At Illinois Orthopedic Institute in Joliet, Bolingbrook, and Channahon, IL, your orthopedic surgeons diagnose tendonitis with:

  • A review of your medical history
  • Physical examination
  • Digital X-ray imaging or MRI done right at Illinois Orthopedic Institute

With this information, your doctors can formulate a treatment plan to make you more comfortable and increase the long-term function of your shoulder joint. However, arthroscopic surgery and open shoulder surgery are not the only options—in fact, they may not even be the preferred courses of action.

Instead, your doctor may use the following to manage your symptoms and improve joint function:

  • Rest, ice and wrapping
  • Physical therapy
  • Range of motion exercises
  • Over the counter analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications (cortisone injections)
  • Limiting activities such as pushing off from a chair with your arms
  • Keeping good posture
  • Massage therapy
  • Not overstretching your shoulder
